Coaching is a supportive and empowering collaboration that fosters personal and professional growth and fulfillment.

When selecting the ideal coach for your needs, it is crucial to take into account various key factors:

  1. Qualifications and credentials While certifications are not mandatory for life coaches, they usually indicate a certain level of training and expertise. Some of the most recognized accrediting bodies for coaches include the International Coach Federation (ICF), the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC), and the International Association of Coaching (IAC), and while each accrediting body has its own set of standards and requirements, their core competencies are quite similar and they all emphasize ethic, excellence, and continued education. Accredited coaches demonstrate commitment to the coaching profession, to high ethical standards, and to learning and mastering their coaching craft. Other qualifications include the coach’s level of education. Coaches receive different levels of training and education, which can influence their ability to meet your unique requirements. Consider your needs and determine if it's essential for the coach to have a specific industry background, use a particular coaching method, or hold a master's degree in coaching psychology.

  2. Chemistry It's also important to find someone who you feel comfortable with and that you believe that you can build a trusting relationship with because the coaching relationship relies heavily on open, honest communication and rapport. Before signing a coaching contract, meet with the coach for a consultation session in which you can evaluate whether you feel comfortable with the coach, whether you like to coach’s approach, and whether you believe there is a good fit between your needs and the coach's expertise. During this call, ask any questions you may have about the coaching process, the coach's background, and the coach’s coaching style. It's important to be open and honest about your expectations and goals. The coaching is a collaborative process, and finding the right coach who aligns with your values and objectives can make a significant difference in achieving your personal and professional growth. Trust your instincts and choose a coach who resonates with you on a personal level.

  3. Referrals and testimonials While referrals and testimonials are valuable for assessing a coach's ability, credibility, and approach, they do not guarantee success. Each coaching relationship is unique, so just because someone else had a positive experience does not ensure the same for you. Also, remember that everyone starts somewhere, and just because a coach is new to the profession doesn't mean they lack the skills or dedication to help you reach your goals. In fact, working with a novice coach can bring energy to your coaching sessions, and their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and grow alongside you can create a dynamic and rewarding coaching experience. In addition, you will usually pay lower fees for the engagement.

  4. The Coach’s methods and approach During the initial chemistry session, it is crucial to openly communicate with your coach regarding your preferences and the methods that resonate with you. A skilled coach will prioritize your requirements and be willing to adapt their techniques to align with your individual preferences and comfort level. Nevertheless, if during the chemistry call, a coach emphasizes a particular approach (such as stating "I specialize in art-based coaching" or "mindfulness coaching"), and you do not feel a connection with these methods, it may be worthwhile to explore other options.

  5. Trust your gut The coaches I know are genuinely committed to supporting their clients on their journeys. Coaching has proven to be a successful method for advancing and implementing positive changes. After considering the factors mentioned, trust your intuition and choose the coach you feel most comfortable with. Still confused? Contact me and ask me anything! Am I the right coach for you?
